- Native American Fact – Tipis, traditionally used by many Plains tribes, were constructed with 18–23 poles, often called “Lodgepole Pines.” The central pole, known as the “Chief Pole,” symbolized the owner of the home. Originally, tipi coverings were made from buffalo hides, but as buffalo populations declined, canvas became the common material. Tipis were typically assembled and taken down by women, who were highly skilled in their construction.
