Nabbing a first place award for the second year in a row, Peninsula High School’s Outlook had an exciting showing at the JEA/NSPA Best of Show competition in Phoenix this past weekend. The considerations for grading included quality of design, content, photography and editorial leadership.

Nicole Pinto, Outlook editor in chief, was a runner-up for Journalist of the Year after claiming the title at the state convention in March. She was one of six students in the nation to receive this accolade. Nicole will graduate this year along with 14 other seniors.

“I don’t think of the Journalist of the Year as my award, because the best of my work was inspired by the people I worked with,” she said. “Winning Best in Show was a great conclusion to four years of hard work and inspiring staff members.”

Managing editor Sarah Hiraki, who received a Superior rating in the Advertising write-off competition, also reflects on the joy of winning such a prestigious award and what this class hopes to leave behind.

“I think we earned it. This year has been a lot of hard work and realizing our goals of being bold and professional,” Hiraki said. “We’ve been growing and progressing as a staff over the past four years, and I hope that legacy we’ve left helps Outlook grow and change into something new.”

The convention drew around 3,000 and was attended by many journalists from Washington. Besides submitting their publications for awards, student’s attended journalism related classes and participated in write-off contests.
