The students and staff who were selected to participate in the China Exchange came back with memories to last a life time. Peninsula High School has a sister school in Jinan China, Jinan No.1 High School. The first few days after landing in China the participants toured around Beijing taking in the sights of the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square and an invigorating hike up the Great Wall. While riding on the bus from one site to another we drove by several of the venues for the 2008 Olympics.
Upon arriving at Jinan No.1 High School the students and staff were treated like royalty. The PHS students presented
PowerPoint shows representing different aspects of life in the United States, from football to Northwest Artists. After the presentations were over, the Chinese students, who were practicing conversational English, had an opportunity to ask questions. The students were highly curious about what it is like to be a teenager in America.
The PHS students were invited to participate in several Chinese classes as students, learning about various aspects of traditional Chinese culture such as Chinese opera, Tai Chi and paper cutting. On one occasion the PHS students also participated in a chemistry class where upon the completion of the lecture all the students went directly into lab. In between classes there was occasionally time for a good old fashioned pick up game of either basketball or football “soccer”.
The exchange program was also able to tour several other schools in Jinan. Although similar in methodology each school offers unique a emphasis for the students who are enrolled in that school. The other schools toured were the Jinan No. 2 High School, the Foreign Language School, and a Special Education School. Jinan No. 2 and the Foreign Language School entertained our students with excellent performances highlighting their students in the areas of dance, performing with traditional instruments, and singing. All the acts were introduced in English for the benefit of the students and staff from the exchange program.
The China Exchange Program benefits all involved in recognizing the over all similarities between two extremely different cultures. The PHS students are already planning the venues to share with their partners from China when they visit in the fall.
